Two, three years ago, I was not a positive person. I wasn’t exactly a pessimist but I certainly flirted with negativity.
I was lost, lonely and directionless. And I let my negative thinking keep me in a baron hinterland way longer than I should.
I stupidly, naively or crazily (you decide!) thought I had no control over my situation. And my situation, might I add, was good. I had a beautiful home, a loving partner and three amazing little people to call my own.
But I was treading water in a sea of negativity while outwardly maintaining normality. I was fraud, a fake and actress in my own life.
My mind was clouded, crowded and unhealthy.
I’d like to say there was one big moment, one epiphany that made me want to change. But truthfully, there wasn’t.
There were lots of little moments, lots of tears and lots of false starts. And what I came to realise pretty quickly is that I only had the capacity to make one small change at a time. That’s it.
One Small Change
Now, I know this doesn’t sound revolutionary or very sexy in the slightest. But one small positive change changed everything.
I joined a Pilates class at Rebound Fitness. And in doing so, I started my trek out of the baron negative hinterland.
I didn’t switch from negativity to positivity overnight…it was a slow, at times painful, nonlinear process, with many stumbles along the way.
There is no roadmap or definite guide on how to become positive. It is a choice to be positive. It is a choice you have to make EVERY SINGLE DAY, in EVERY SINGLE MOMENT/ISSUE/PROBLEM/CHALLENGE you encounter.
8 Tips To Become More Positive Today
If you want to make positive changes in your life, here are my top 8 tips to become more positive today:
1. Own Your Problems And Your Feelings
To make positive and sustainable change you must take ownership of yourself, your problems and your choices. If you’ve made bad decisions in your past, own them, forgive yourself and get out of your own way. It is the only way to move forward positively. You cannot change the past but you can shape your future.
Equally, if you have had other people’s decisions hurt you and you’re constantly hitting replay or doling out blame…stop. The only thing you can control is your reaction to another person's action. Let go of past hurts, forget the blame and take control of your feelings.
To truly live a positive and mindful life, you need to live your own life, by your own standards. Comparing yourself to others automatically devalues your opinions, your self-worth and self-confidence.
3. Ditch Negativity
If you surround yourself with negativity, you will be a negative Nancy. Surround yourself with people and things that fill you with joy, that lift you up and support your dreams and goals. These people are your positive, happy tribe.
4. Be kind
In a world where you can be anything and do anything…BE KIND. It is the greatest gift you can bestow to anyone, it doesn’t cost you a cent and you can completely alter someone’s day with a kind word, action or smile. Kindness and positivity are lovingly linked.
5. Practise Gratitude
Practising gratitude will positively improve and enhance your life. Continually acknowledging positive aspects of your life brings a sense of happiness and fulfilment even in the most challenging of times.
6. Exercise More
Exercise promotes positivity. Stress and anxiety become more manageable. You gain purpose, confidence, strength but above all, you learn discipline. And once positivity and exercise become part of your everyday life…this discipline prevents regression to the hinterland.
7. Eliminate STUFF
Simplify your life. Discard things, stuff and people (of course, gently – never rudely) that cause stress, negativity and drama in your life. This emotional clutter, once eliminated, creates a clear path for positivity, calm and happiness. The older I get the more I realize you need very little to be happy.
8. One Small Change
It’s OK to have a BIG picture but forget it for the moment. Start small, change one thing. This one small change will immediately make you feel more positive, in control and happy despite how far you have to go to fulfil the big picture.
