There was a time, in my not so distant past, jet setting and spending large amounts of time on aeroplanes was as familiar to me as negotiating sibling rivalry is now.
Every month I’d buckle up and promptly pull out my book or pop on my headphones.
I travelled so much I figured I didn’t need to listen to one more safety announcement. Bloody heck, I could properly give the speech in a pinch.
However, on my way home from New
Put Your Own Oxygen Mask On First
When the air hostess got to the part about the oxygen mask, I couldn’t help but draw a comparison between my life as a mother, wife and general juggler and the oxygen mask.
"In the event of a decompression, an oxygen mask will automatically appear in front of you…... If you are travelling with a child or someone who requires assistance, secure your mask on first, and then assist the other person."
Of course, I’ve heard
How many times in my life, as a mother, have I secured my own mask first?
Probably 9 times out of 10, I wasn’t prioritising myself or my goals.
That night, on that flight, I realised that to be everything to everyone, to be
And no – this doesn’t mean I’ve had a weekly massage and pedicure since I’ve returned to Ireland but I have given my own personal needs more attention.
It’s impossible to pour from an empty cup. This analogy about putting on your oxygen mask first before helping others is so important for all women to remember. As a mother, it's critical to make sure that you're building up your own emotional reserves in order to be there for others. To support, love endlessly, nurture and give unconditionally to your loved ones, you must act from a position of strength.
We often feel, as mothers, that we’re being selfish for complaining or taking time away from our families. This is CRAZY.
I now believe self-care should not be optional. The greatest gift you can give to yourself and those around is your own self-development.
Nurture And Nourish Your Body
I am learning to put my own oxygen mask on first. Every day I find ways to nurture and nourish my body and soul.
- Each morning I prioritize my health and fitness by doing my Pepper Hustle Fit Pyramid.
- I follow this with 10 minutes of journaling, setting my goals for the day and getting my mind straight.
- And I end every day with at least 30 minutes of reading.
I am very much a work in progress. I realise that putting my own oxygen mask on first is going to take effort. But I also believe that prioritising myself will allow me to reconnect with myself, to breathe, to grow, to learn, to have more energy and love to give.
That is why, from now on, I will put my oxygen mask on first.
Have you been putting your oxygen mask on first?
