Sleep glorious sleep. Something we all wish we could get more of. Whether you are young free and single, burning the candle at both ends voluntarily. Or if you are an exhausted parent burning that candle at both ends involuntarily. Sleep glorious sleep. Something we all wish we could get more of.
The amount of sleep we get affects how we look, feel and perform on a daily basis and can have a major impact on our overall quality of life.
However, the funny thing about sleep, is that we rarely prioritise it unless we are walking around like a truly exhausted pigeon struggling to coo. Only then does it cross our minds to have an early night.
Yet, sleep is one of the most important things we can give ourselves.
When we sleep this is what happens to our body as documented by the National Sleep Foundation:
- Blood pressure drops
- Muscles relax
- Blood supply to muscles increases
- Tissue growth and repair occurs
- Energy is restored
- Hormones are released, such as: Growth hormone, essential for growth and development, including muscle development
So, isn't it about time we prioritise our sleep and the quality of it?
An evening routine is a really nice way to prepare your body for sleep, it can help calm the mind, stop the business and help you switch off so that when you hit the pillow you drift off seamlessly into a good quality night’s sleep.
Here are a few things you can do to be kind to your body and mind before sleep. You should try and create a little ritual before bed each night and watch how your days improve as you are rejuvenated, full of life and bursting with energy.
